Creatures in 蜡染 Là Răn are mostly mythical, which their prototypes were mainly based on the prehistoric animals such as dinosaurs or mammals.

青龙 Qīng Lóng - The Azure Dragon
Guardian of the East and the spring season, also called the Bluegreen Dragon of the East. In the myths, the Azure Dragon is in charge of wind and thunder, it's the creator of thousands forms of life. It also symbolizes the greatest fortune.

白虎 Baí Hŭ - The White Tiger
Guardian of the West and the autumn season, it's also called The White Tiger of the West. In the myths, the White Tiger only appears when the emperor rules with absolute virtue, or there is peace throughout the world.

朱雀 Zhū Què - The Vermilion Bird -
Guardian of the South and the summer season, also called the Vermilion Bird of the South. It's in charge of fire in the myths, it also symbolizes the Sun and the Future. It is often mistaken for the Fenghuang (phoenix) due to their similarities in appearance. The Fenghuang (phoenix) is the king of birds, while the Vermilion Bird is a mythological spirit creature of the Chinese constellations.

玄武 Xuán Wǔ- The Black Tortoise
Guardian of the North and the winter season, it's also called the Black Warrior of the North. This is the only totem in the four guardians that has two creatures in one combined. The tortoise symbolizes Yin, the stable; the snake symbolizes Yang, the movement. They also both symbolize longevity.
